UPDATE*** Dropped the Acure, back to just BS and Water for shampoo and ACV and Water conditioner/detangler. I’ve found that using just a bit more ACV/Water eliminates any dry/crunchy feeling.***

 

It’s been nearly 7 weeks since I’ve made some serious changes to the way I treat my hair and skin. During that time I have experimented a lot with different types of ‘no-poo’ hair products with some major failures along the way. In the end I’d say it’s been pretty easy, really, it’s just totally different from what I’m used to but now I don’t think twice when I prep for a shower by grabbing my box of baking soda. I think for me, one of the toughest parts was that I decided to take a break from using hot tools like a blow dryer, curling iron and flat iron at the same time I decided to stop using shampoo.

It wasn’t until two days ago that I finally decided it was time to introduce two things into my hair care regimen: Regular shampoo (wait, what?) and hot tools. I did massive amounts of research on natural shampoos from bars to bottles before finding one that a) didn’t make my hair feel like a scary, gummy, tangled mess and b) wasn’t loaded with chemicals. My hair was starting to feel really dried out from the Baking Soda, right at the crown of my head and I wasn’t able to find a good ratio of ACV and water that wouldn’t make my hair at my roots feel and look greasy/weighed down. I tried Herban Lifestyle shampoo bar and thought it was terrible. I tried lathering the bar first then applying the lather to my hair, I tried applying the bar directly to my hair, either way it felt awful. I even tried to use it as regular soap and it just left me with that gross residue feeling. I also tried a couple of chemical free, all natural soaps from sprouts and had the same results. Bad idea. Now as for the hot tools, well that decision was made because I just got bored with wavy hair. Ya, it was cute and beachy, but sometimes I want stick straight hair or a blow out or loose body waves or lots of curls not to mention it cuts down my getting ready time tremendously. So two days ago I hit my stride with ‘no-poo’, here’s what I did on Friday and tonight (Sunday) my hair is still looking great, even after sleeping on it twice, which usually always messes my hair up.

Shampoo: 1 Tbsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Acure Moroccan Argan Stem Cell + Argan Oil Shampoo ****I’ve since eliminated this, but still works great if you want a little bubble action****
8oz warm water
Adding just a teaspoon of the Acure shampoo made a huge difference in the way my hair feels, at least while washing it. Before it felt crunchy or sticky, even while wet. The shampoo gave it just the right amount of slip (that’s the best way I can describe it) to make it manageable while combing it out.

Leave in conditioner: 1part ACV : 3-4part water
Mixed in a spray bottle, sprayed on ends and lightly all over, used while damp almost dry as well as lightly sprayed all over once my hair was dried and styled. I think spraying it on my hair after I was out of the shower gave me more control than dunking my hair in an ACV rinse. My spray bottle sprays a mist too which to me gave me a feeling that it was more evenly distributed. It may be all in my head but for now it works.  I also spray on my hair while in the shower and use a paddle brush to comb out any tangles while rinsing my hair under running water.

Because I’ve had such a good experience switching some of my hair and skin care products to all natural kinds I thought I’d share my faves with my friends for Christmas so I purchased a bunch of cute amber bottles and glass jars in various sizes and made everyone gift bags with 6 all natural products that I made and bottled myself.

Each bag contained a roll on perfume with lime, bergamot, rose and Jasmine essential oils, a room freshener with orange, clove and cinnamon, a bottle of all purpose cleaner, a bottle of window cleaner (which is actually the leave in conditioner above, how cool is that), a whipped shea butter and sugar body scrub and a coconut oil and sugar face scrub.

Roll-on Perfume:
1/3 oz bottle
1/4 teaspoon Epsom salt
15-20 drops of essential oils, varying scents (You could probably get away with less, but I like a strong scent)
Jojoba oil
I made a funnel out of an index card to get everything in the tiny bottles. First add salts, then essential oils, top it off with jojoba oil.

Room freshener:
2oz spray bottle
1/2 teaspoon Epsom salt
3-4 drops Cinnamon EO
3-4 drops Clove EO
10 drops Orange EO
Water
First add salts, the essential oils, top it off with water.

Whipped Shea Butter and Sugar Body Scrub:
This one was a real fun experiment, I literally added random amounts of ingredients till it was a consistency that felt nice but these are the basics.
Raw Shea Butter
Avocado Oil
White sugar
Orange EO
Jasmine EO
Use a hand mixer to whip the ingredients together. Start with the Shea butter and slowly add additional ingredients till it’s a smooth consistency. Store in a glass jar.

Coconut Oil and Sugar Scrub:
Couldn’t be any easier…
Coconut oil
Brown sugar
White sugar
Play around with the ingredients to find a consistency you like, I really like this as an exfoliator so I go pretty heavy with the sugar. Mix it with a spoon, store in a glass jar.

All purpose cleaner:
1oz spray bottle
1-2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
Lemon or Orange EO
Water
Mix together, easy peasy.

I like the smaller bottles for a couple of reasons…one, we live in a tiny house so the smaller the bottle the better but also because I don’t end up liking the mixture or product, I don’t feel like I wasted a whole lot of product.

Aside from the dollop of shampoo I used the other day I have not used any store bought products on my hair or skin in 7 weeks…that includes toothpaste, perfume, moisturizers, face wash, or soap. Wait, that’s not true…I’ve used a small amount of 10% Glycolic Acid cream (I know) as a spot treatment on a couple of PMS blemishes. We ditched our old house cleaners and window cleaner for all natural versions and use both the air freshener recipe I made for the gifts but also one with Jasmine and peppermint, it’s smells amazing.

The best thing about all of this, well one of the best things, is how easy it all is to make! Simple ingredients, mixed together…almost foolproof.

A few weeks ago I mentioned to my boyfriend that I want to try to go a whole month without using any hot styling tools which for me means no blow dryer, flat iron and curling iron. I love my hot tools, they save me time and I have perfected my go-to looks but my BF gave me a ‘ya right’ glance and it was right then that I said, that’s it, I’m going to do it…or not do it. And to take it a step further I decided now would be the perfect time to stop using store bought shampoos, conditioners and styling products, you know, right during the busy holiday season. The timing kind of sucks but I honestly don’t know if there is a good time to transition from shampoo to no-poo.  Also, my goal here was not to see how long I could go without washing my hair, I like clean hair and with hot yoga I have to wash my hair often. The goal for me was to eliminate ALL store bought products so everything I’ve been using have been all natural products, most of which I found in my kitchen and mixed up by me.

Hair type: I have chemically treated/bleached hair with some subtle natural wave. It’s very, very dry and I’d say it’s typically not to oily.

I tried a number of different combos of ‘shampoos’ and ‘conditioners’ but I think I tried them to early on in the process while my scalp/hair has been transitioning. I don’t think my transition process has really been any different from others that I have read about but here is what has really worked for me the past few days…(I am now 24 days in)

Simple shampoo and conditioner. That’s it. To cut down on the massively oily area on the back side of my scalp I’ve upped my baking soda to water ratio a bit and when I use my Apple Cider Vinegar rinse I only apply it to my ends! If I drench my scalp with the ACV rinse my hair looks and feels weighed down. So I literally dunk the bottom half of my hair in the glass of ACV & water. I’ve also found that adding a few drops of essential oils helps especially with the ACV, by the time my hair dries the ACV is hardly noticeable.

So 24 days in and my hair is still not feeling that great, I’d say it feels like day 3 hair that I’ve sprayed a ton of dry shampoo in, you know that chalky, almost cakey feeling although it’s not nearly as slick and oily as it was that first week and if I brush it out it will turn piecey in a matter of minutes…it’s just a totally different look than what I typically would have but I like it!

I’ve also now gone 23 days without store bought face wash, body wash, lotions and perfumes or toothpaste. I’ve made my own various mixes or sugar scrubs, essential oils, coconut and jojoba oil for my skin and baking soda for my hair and teeth. I’m not sure if it’s psychological but I feel better, like fresher or lighter or cleaner…I’m not sure how to describe it and at this time I have no desire to go back.
